Beginners’ Guide - Finding out what’s new

Postby Rumpelteazer » Fri Nov 27, 2009 8:01 pm

It can take some time rummaging around the forums to find the messages that you haven’t yet read. So this Beginners’ Guide tells you how to home in quickly on new messages that might be of interest to you. There are three methods:
  1. Finding the posts that have been made since you last logged on to the system
  2. Finding the posts that you haven’t yet read (even if they have been there for some time)
  3. Subscribing to a forum or topic to enable you to receive email notification of any new posts

1. Finding the posts that have been made since you last logged on to the system
Go to the main forum index by clicking on the word “Forum” in the menu bar immediately below the Study Society logo.
Click on “View new posts”. (If you can’t see these words it means you are not on the main forum index page.)

A page will come up showing a list of all the topics that include posts that have been made since you last logged in. It will tell you how many there are near the top right of the screen. If they don’t fit on one page there will be a tiny square with a page number in it (which you can click on) for each additional page.

Click on a topic that you are interested in to read the new messages. If you want to go back to the list of new posts, just click the “back” button on your browser.

2. Finding the posts that you haven’t yet read
This is really easy! Go to the main forum index by clicking on the word “Forum” in the menu bar immediately below the Study Society logo. All the forums containing topics that you haven’t read will be shown in red.

Click on a forum that you are interested in. You will now see a list of the topics in the forum and again, those you haven’t read will be shown in red.

3. Subscribing to a forum or topic
If you are interested in a particular topic or a whole forum or sub-forum you might want to subscribe to it. When you subscribe to a topic or forum, you will be sent a message via email when anyone adds a new post. This is especially useful if you have asked a question and want to know when someone has answered it.

Let’s start with a topic. Suppose you are interested in Dots topic called Writing Papers. Go to this topic. Scroll down to reach the end of all the posts. You will see a menu bar at the bottom containing the words “Subscribe topic”. Click on these words.

A message will come up saying that you have subscribed to this topic

Subscribing to a whole forum is very similar. Suppose you are interested in the forum “Group meetings, papers and meeting reports”. Go to the index page for this forum showing a list of all the topics in the forum.

Scroll down to the end of the list of topics. You will see a menu bar at the bottom containing the words “Subscribe forum”. Click on these words.
